PennywortThis tiny, spreading perennial is a member of the parsley family. It is a very common turf weed from the Middle Atlantic states westward through Kentucky. Pennywort is often confused with ground ivy, but they have many varying characteristics. Leaves of pennywort are alternate, nearly round, smooth and glossy, with slight indentations around the edges. They are perched atop slender stems. Pennywort creeps and spreads through the grass until it forms nearly solid patches. The plant takes root wherever leaves join the trailing stems. Tiny flowers are crowded in clusters and each has five very small petals. In some areas pennywort is used as a ground cover.
