Description: Perennial sedge with 3-ranked leaves and triangular stems. Deeply rhizomatous with charcoal-colored, hairy tubers connected by rhizomes. Inflorescence is dark-red, brown, to purple in color and contains deeply-packed clusters, each with 2-12 spikelets. Leaf tips of purple nutsedge form a blunt tip while leaf tips of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) more gradually taper to a tip.
